Sam Waterston has starred in film, television and on stage, earning critical acclaim and a host of awards. He joined the cast of Wolf Films/Universal Network Television’s LAW & ORDER in 1994 as Jack McCoy, a charismatic and tough Assistant District Attorney. A three-time Emmy nominee for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series, Waterston previously received the 1999 Screen Actors Guild Award, a Screen Actors Guild nomination in 1998 and a Golden Globe nomination in 1995.

Waterston also received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in THE KILLING FIELDS, three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe Award for I’LL FLY AWAY, as well as Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Most Promising Newcomer for his portrayal of Nick Carraway in THE GREAT GATSBY. He received an Emmy Award as host of the ten-part NBC informational series LOST CIVILIZATIONS, and has been nominated for several British Television Awards.

Waterston’s other notable film credits include the Woody Allen films INTERIORS, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS and CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, John Waters’ SERIAL MOM, HOPSCOTCH and HEAVEN’S GATE and two Anthony Harvey films; Tenessee Williams’ THE GLASS MENAGERIE with Katharine Hepburn, Michael Moriarty, Joanna Miles and EAGLES WING with Martin Sheen and Harvey Keitel. He starred opposite Jeff Bridges in Tom McGuane’s RANCHO DELUXE and with Reese Witherspoon in MAN IN THE MOON. Waterston starred opposite Jennifer Beals and Lisa Gay Hamilton in the cable movie, which he also produced, A HOUSE DIVIDED, and portrayed Abraham Lincoln opposite Mary Tyler Moore in Gore Vidal’s television mini-series, LINCOLN. In addition, Waterston appeared in the NBC movie, THE MATTHEW SHEPARD STORY, in which he starred opposite Stockard Channing. Waterston’s most recent films include THE COMMISSION with Martin Landau and LE DIVORCE with Kate Hudson, Glenn Close and Stockard Channing.

Waterston appeared in the Syracuse Stage production of Eugene O’Neill’s LONG DAY’S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT. The critically praised production also starred his son James Waterston (ANOTHER TIME, THE LADY AND THE CLARINET), as well as Elizabeth Franz (Tony Award-winner for her performance in the recent revival of DEATH OF A SALESMAN) and John Slattery.

Waterston’s stage work includes Broadway and off-Broadway productions as well as many productions with the New York Shakespeare Festival, such as AS YOU LIKE IT, CYMBELINE, MEASURE FOR MEASURE and HAMLET. He earned a Tony Award nomination for his role as Abe Lincoln in ABE LINCOLN IN ILLINOIS at the Lincoln Center Theater in New York, and an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award for his portrayal of Benedick in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. In 2004 Waterston returned to The Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park in a reprise production of MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. This time Sam portrayed Leonato opposite his daughter, Elisabeth (THE PRINCE AND ME) starring in the Hero role. Most recently Waterston appeared as Henry Carr in Tom Stoppard’s TRAVESTIES at the Longwharf Theater in New Haven, Connecticut.

Waterston, who has four children, lives in Connecticut with his wife.
